Each year the major trade bodies judge thousands of wines, awarding medals to the stand-outs. While we don't buy wine just because they won gongs, it is still nice when our choices are recognised! Here we offer a mixed case of award winners:

Three Choirs, Classic Cuvee, Gloucestershire - SWA GOLD

An interesting blend of Seyval and Pinot Noir, traditionally made: a dry, subtle and classy example that illustrates Englands growing expertise in Sparkling Wine.

Royal Tokaji, 'The Oddity' Dry Furmint - SWA GOLD

The main grape of Tokaji's famous sweet wines shows its pedigree here in this finely balanced, complex wine, showing minerality, floral, herbal notes, apple and peach flavours. A lively wine with crisp acidity, and a long finish.

Gros Manseng, Rigal, Vin Orange - SWA SILVER

a great introduction to 'Vin Orange' (white wine made like red wine, with extended skin contact.) Made with wild yeasts, minimum intervention and minimal sulphur, it has a golden hue, a nose full of white peach and citrus aromas and a long, complex, slightly toasted finish.

Trinca Bolotas, Peso de Herdade, Alentejo - DWWA PLATINUM

A wine that has long had a following in Deillah, vibrant red in colour. Great aromatic intensity dominated by ripe red and black fruits (blackberries, raspberries and black plums). Full bodied, with good tannins, balanced acidity and a long finish.

'Quercus', Cabernet Merlot, Goriska Brda, Slovenia - SWA GOLD

Goriška Brda is just across the Italian border, and the wines are viticulturally one and the same. Angela Muir MW consults on the winemaking; the result is fresh, modern wine that offer an extra terroir-driven complexity and elegance, unusual for the price

Otto Bucce, Dezzani, Piemonte - GILBERT & GAILLARD GOLD

Literally meaning '8 skins', Ottobucce refers to the 8 grapes which have been blended to make this wine. Complex on the nose with delicate aromas of red fruits, vanilla and fine spices. Soft on the palate.
